Black Dog Films director Adam Powell reunites with The 1975 to deliver a tongue-in-cheek dig at expected pop music video clichés, especially the ones that come along with a track entitled “Girls.”
The video begins with the British rockers poking a bit of fun at being labeled strictly a pop band, “Everything feels totally wrong…we’re not a pop band…it needs to be black and white for a start,” cheekily states the lead singer Matthew Healy, referring to the band's stylistic tendency to render their image in moody grayscale. The single kicks in with performance footage cut with various moments where the band is clearly disinterested by the models parading around the set as hyper-sexualized objects. The 80’s-inspired tune delivers a nod to Robert Palmer, though the models “play” their instruments in black lingerie, followed by a range of colorful scenarios in which the girls are helpless, posing robotically, or otherwise clueless.
Adam Powell’s treatment showcases a fresh, playful side to The 1975 as a group who isn’t afraid of the occasional satire – or dose of color.
